You have an irregular sleep rhythm and can’t wake up in the morning? Here are two tricks – both tested – on how you will get yourself reliably out of bed.

- The Pavlok Shock Clock: Instead of a loud sound, the Shock Slock will literally shock you awake. The bracelet is designed to send an electric impulse to your wrist, strong enough to induce an adrenaline rush which will force you awake. Don’t worry, the electric impulse remains well below the threshold where it causes pain or harm, which makes it even suitable for children.
- Luminette Light Therapy Glasses: Daylight is the body’s main zeitgeber telling it what time of the day it is. This works through the wave length of the light and the Luminette is optimized to morning sunlight. Wearing it in the morning hours will unmistakably tell your body that it’s time to wake up, on which your inner-physiological systems start adapting. Over time, you will start reliably waking up every time at the desired time.
- Sunrise Alarm Clock: A couple of lux-levels below the Luminette is the sunrise alarm clock, which works with the wave length of the morning sun as well and comes with the convenience of a normal alarm clock. Waking up to the rising sun will help some who need bright light to wake up, but aren’t able to put on the daylight glasses. The lesser effect of the sunrise alarm clock compared to the Luminette is matched by its lower price.
- 200mg of Pure Caffeine: When the alarm clock rings, take one pill of pure caffeine (200mg) and then go back to sleep. Exactly 15 minutes later you will be awake and ready to start your day; the released cortisol will make sure of that. Make sure to drink at least 8 sips of water with the pill, otherwise you risk acid reflux. Additionally, it’s also important to minimize your caffeine intake during the day, so the caffeine pill won’t lose its effect over time.
The caffeine pill trick probably won’t work every time in the beginning. In fact, you may wake up sometimes with a puddle of water next to your head with a dissolved caffeine pill inside. But if you give it a chance, your body will soon respond to the alarm clock every morning and soon after, you will be able to reliably swollow pill and water without causing an accident.
